103026 ShroudDENTON — An exhibit coming to Denton offers people the chance to learn more about the Shroud of Turin, the most studied relic in Christian history.

“Man in the Shroud” is a free, multimedia educational exhibit about the shroud, which is believed by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth.

This will be the second time the exhibit has been on display in North Carolina, thanks to Peter Mcguire of Denton.

Mcguire first brought the exhibit to two churches in Elkin in 2022, and it drew more than 1,600 people of all denominations.

He has been fascinated with the shroud for years and first started wondering if an educational exhibit about it existed after he and his wife visited an exhibit on the Sistine Chapel in Charlotte several years ago.

“I wondered if there was an exhibit like that about the shroud, and then I learned about this one,” Mcguire said. The exhibit is based at the National Shrine of Maximilian Kolbe in Marytown, Illinois, and can be lent out to those who want to put it on display.

Mcguire travels to Illinois to bring it back to North Carolina and sets it up with the assistance of volunteers.

The exhibit includes a film, a life-sized replica of the shroud, a life-size crucifix and 62 educational panels.

Besides being a fascinating Christian relic, Mcguire says the Shroud is also a remarkable testament of Christ’s love.

“For me personally, the shroud is very important – it helped me come back to my faith after I had lost my faith,” he said. “It makes the Bible and the self-sacrifice of Christ real.”

The exhibit will be on display Nov. 8-15 at Central United Methodist Church, 276 West 1st St. in Denton. It is accessible for those with disabilities. Spanish-language materials will be available. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday.
