CHARLOTTE — A former Catholic Charities employee has been charged in connection with $13,000 in unauthorized personal expenses on a business credit card.

Leah Margaret Stewart, 46, of Charlotte was arrested April 26 and charged with felony embezzlement and money laundering. She was released the next day on a $25,000 bond.

Stewart was hired in December 2024 as a disaster case management supervisor in Catholic Charities’ Charlotte office.

In June, the diocese said, an audit found that a credit card issued to Stewart was used to pay for $13,001.65 in unauthorized personal expenses between March and May. Stewart was terminated July 1, 2025. The diocese reported the matter to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and is seeking restitution.
