Pilgrims attend Mass with their bishops in Rome

050912paul-walls-massROME — The picturesque bus ride out to the church of St. Paul Outside the Walls was just a prelude for the beautiful liturgy tonight as the pilgrims from the Diocese of Charlotte and the Archdioceses of Atlanta and Miami celebrated Mass with all of the bishops of Region XIV.

Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami, Fla., was the principal celebrant for the Mass.

In his homily Archbishop Wenski preached on the theme that has been appropriately woven into the liturgy this week on Christ as the vine and we are the branches, and that by staying close to Him we grow in faith and have the courage to take on the difficulties in our lives and in our world.

The smiles on the faces of the faithful said it all – we were happy to be in the presence of Our Lord and our bishops on their ad limina pilgrimage. There was a great sense of family among us and also of gratitude, that we had the opportunity to spend time in communion with one another and our shepherds.

Tonight the pilgrims will be guests of the bishops at a special dinner in Rome.
