'Choose Life' license plates delayed

A federal court has temporarily stopped the distribution of the "Choose Life" license plates. The license plates, approved by the General Assembly in June, were scheduled to be distributed by the N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles to drivers willing to pay a $25 premium.
U.S. District Court Judge James Foxx of the state's Eastern District issued a temporary restraining order Nov. 28 pending the outcome of a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union.
The Choose Life plates were approved by the legislature after a seven-year effort on the part of supporters. Both Charlotte Bishop Peter Jugis and Raleigh Bishop Michael Burbidge supported the plates.
The state already issues specialty license plates for everything from the Blue Ridge Parkway to NASCAR.
Pending the outcome of the trial, funds raised from the plates' sales will be distributed through the Carolina Pregnancy Care Fellowship in support of education for women considering an abortion.
